In recent years, the rapid development of communication theory, computer technologyand special chip technology promotes advances in the PLC technology, expands areas inPLC application. PLC technology has its huge economical advantage without layingcommunication lines, which causes much people pay attention to it. PLC technology iswidely applied in the intelligent home and distribution automation. Now, the design trend ofPLC technology applied to the meter reading system, is designed and explored by usinghighly integrated and low power loss dedicated chip as main controller. Based on analyzingthe advantage of PLC technology and the harsh condition of the power line communicationchannel, this paper chooses an Application-Specific integrated circuit (ASIC) using PRIMEtechnology as communication standard and OFDM technology as modulation schemes todesign power line carrier meter reading terminal.According to the requirement of power line communication that stability is moreimportant than the speed, and in order to effectively restraint the interference and highattenuation of the power line channel, this paper chooses ADD1021chip made by SpainADD1021company to design and explore power line carrier meter reading terminal. TheADD1021is the hardware implementation of the PRIME, which has rich internal resources.It not only includes the control circuit of the OFDM modulation, but also integrate themedia channel controller(MAC layer), which could achieves the design of AMR terminalexpediently.As PRIME technology has not been widely used till now, this paper do intendto introduce the background and architecture of the PRIME technology in order to promotenew technology, and then focuses on the general design requirement,technical specificationas well as hardware and software design of the single-phase power line carrier meterreading.At last, introduces the critical circuits in hardware and the software development.The introduction for hardware includes the selection and design of main controller, themetering schemes and alternative introduction of the fundamental circuits. For softwaredesign,it is provided in the paper with overall program design for the single-phase powerline carrier meter reading terminal. Due to the limit of the length of this paper, onlycommunication program is given and illustrated, together with the debugging processdisplay and the result of the communication program.All of these are based on ADD1021development board. Finally, the paper puts forward the prospect of PRIME technology usedon the remote automatic meter reading system.
