In recent years, with the prices of energies and raw materials rising rapidly, the manufacturing costs have been growing up greatly in all the industries. Our country has proposed the strategic principle of building a conservation-oriented society. Now Power line carrier wave communication has received more attention and research work from power industries because of its cost savings. Electricity supply network has covered the whole country and moreover low-voltage power lines directly connect every household, which constitutes the most popular nationwide network. The use of power line carrier communication for data exchange and information transmission, can not occupy the originally tight supplies of wireless channel resources, but also be free of the troubles of building a specific communication network, which saves a great deal of manpower and material resources and has wide developing prospects. This paper presents a set of dedicated research process of a centralized meter-reading system constructed by the special low-voltage power line carrier communications chip as the core. The carrier communication chip mentioned in this paper is the civilian one researched and developed by Fudan Microelectronics Co., Ltd. The chips mainly adopt the algorithm of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS). The author mainly engaged in the work of chip-verification and testing, hardware designing of meter-reading system, etc. This paper mainly includes the system requirement analysis, the functions of the communication chip and its typical application, the design and implementation of communication protocol, the and development process of meter-reading system, and theon-site operations of the system.
