Research On Design Of The Urban High-rise Residential Exterior Space In The Old City Area Of Guangzhou

With rapid development and urbanization of China in the21st century, Guangzhou isfacing an increasingly conflict of growing population and limited land for residential andindustrial use in the city, especially in the old town area. Trend of high-rise dwelling withhigh density is becoming an effecitve and major approach to resolve the conflict above,which is emerging in the old town area of Guangzhou. The high-rise residentialexterior-space is different from the low-rise dwelling space, moreover, the high-riseresidential exterior-space in the old town area of Guangzhou has different spatial form andenvironmental characteristic, requiring relevant practice and theoretical study to support thedevelopment of Guangzhou.This paper researchs on the design of high-rise residential exterior-space in the oldtown area of Guangzhou, in order to present a new design theory of high-rise residentialexterior-space in the old town area of Guangzhou through actual examples investigations,theory analysis and other methods, specific to the problem existed as well as the featuresand need of residential form in the old town area of Guangzhou.There are five chapters in this paper. The first and second chapters introduce thebackgound and basic research, introducing purpose and significance of the research,summarizing definition and characteristic of urban high-rise residential space andexterior-space. The third chapter analyses the situation and propose the problems, whichchooses several outstanding and famous high-rise residential space in the old town area ofGuangzhou as cases, to analyses and propose the problems of material element andnon-material element of exterior-space——for example spatial form, social activities andlandscape——followed by establishing appropriate design objective. The fourth and fifthchapters aim at problem solving, presenting a new design theory of high-rise residentialexterior-space in the old town area of Guangzhou according to the problem analysis andobjective establishment above, in both sides of material element design and non-materialelement design. This research aims at motivating and contributing to the high-riseresidential construction and exterior-space design of the old town area in Guangzhou.
