Final drive is one of the main components of the driving axle of wheel loader. It is employed in driveline to reduce the revolution, amplify the rotating torque and shift the direction of the torque from transverse to longitude to drive the wheels rotate.Because of the bad work environment of the wheel loader, the early failure occurs easily and leads to the deformation, breakdown, fatigue and the abrasion of the gear tooth of final drive. It is necessary to find out the origins of the failure and commit relevant corrective methods to control the failure and improve the reliability.In this article, we apply the failure analysis theory to analyze the failure of the final drive, discuss the causes of the failure and list the typical failure modes. Based on the failure analysis, the improvement methods are designed and used as following: Improve the property of material to meet the requirement of carburization; Optimize the heat treatment process;Optimize the structure, the machining and assembly process to reduce the impact; We improve the processing as per the new plan. As the result of application in whole machine show, a remarkable decrease of warranty rate is acquired. We finally achieve an effective solution of early failure.
