As the product of the science and technology and art of human society, automobile is the combination of technique, process and emotion. As an advanced and complex area of the industrial design, automotive design is characterized by its multi-disciplinary and multi-process interaction. The automotive modeling design process, which is also regarded as the process of shaping the products’image and satisfying users’needs, is becoming an important strategy to win the competitive market. As the promotion of the living standard and consuming level, the spiritual demand and affection need of human beings to the automotive design are more and more intense. As a result, the automotive design is developing towards diversification, individuation, differentiation and emotion. The key point of this work is the study on the automotive modeling expression design which is based on the product semantics theory. The research aim is to establish the semantic space of the automotive modeling image description and the automotive modeling expression design process based on the product semantics which can provide theoretical and methodological support.The automotive modeling expression design process is investigated based on the semantic space from the product semantics. The characteristics, classification, detailed content and development tendency is analyzed. The semantic space of the automotive modeling expression and the automotive modeling expression design process based on the semantic space are established. This work aims to establish a scientific and reasonable automotive modeling expression design system based on the product semantics which can provide theoretical support for the designers and enterprise. In addition, this work can also provide some new ideas for the theoretical study on the automotive modeling design in the future.In this work, the semantic space of the automotive modeling expression is established based on the related concepts of the product semantics and automotive modeling expression. Meanwhile, the semantic space of the form, color and materials of an SUV is established according to the practical investigation and the semantic space is converted into the visual space. The automotive modeling expression design process is analyzed, studied and established based on the product semantics and its validity is verified according to an investigation. The correlation theories of the product semantics are helpful in directing practical design. It’s a necessary research tendency to apply the product semantics to automotive modeling expression design.
