The value of urban waterfront has become an important focus of world attention.Urban waterfront development and construction has become a hot spot in the processof building the city. Waterfront development in the city has gradually transformed intoa worldwide phenomenon. In the broader context, China’s urban policy-makers arealso aware of the importance of the waterfront, from the north to the south, someriverside, lakeside, seaside projects step by step, to achieve certain results. Medium andsmall cities have inevitably involved in waterfront development boom. Medium and small citiesurban waterfront development and construction will undoubtedly bring a goodopportunity to enhance the environmental quality of the city and the quality of life.However, the development of the medium and small cities waterfront has its ownparticularity and complexity. It is by no means the successful development of a slamdunk, while the medium and small cities waterfront development and construction of ourresearch is still in the exploratory stage. The research topic of the article is the mediumand small cities waterfront.Take the development and construction of Jining North Lakedistrict which is most familiar to the author’s hometown as an example. The purposeof the study is based on the research of medium and small cities waterfront urban design,through the waterfront area of Jining Beihu updated design of the study design mademore complete and updated proposal, which is a guiding role for being progressiveconstruction of the North Lake. And it also can be a reference for medium and smallcities waterfront urban design.This article is specifically through five chapters toexplain the entire research process.The first chapter introductory part is mainly described research background,purpose and meaning, the object of study and research areas, domestic and foreignresearch status and level and research methods framework in detail.The second chapter first from the view of concept to present the whole urbanwaterfront overview, including urban waterfront concepts and classifications, mediumand small urban waterfront development history, characteristics and development ofChina’s medium and small urban waterfront development in the process of the main problems,then selected direction from the theory of medium and small urban waterfrontdesign theory as a powerful theoretical support papers. Cases through the introductionof national and international practice and analysis provide a reference and inspirationfor medium and small urban waterfront urban design.The third chapter from the specific elements of the direction, analysis of smalland medium urban waterfront urban design principles and design elements thatinvolved.It also has analysis of waterfront urban design, architectural design,landscape design and socio-economic factors in detail of medium and small urbanwaterfront, which is the fundamental basis for urban design of medium and small urbanwaterfront. Of course, particular case is particular analysis, small and medium urbanwaterfront design should be adapted to local conditions, and make developmentdesigned to meet the region’s ideas.The forth chapter from the research point of view, the first of the overalldescribes the history and development of the old city of Jining and Jining NorthLake’s history. Through the water of this powerful link to the development of NorthLake and the old town development are closely linked, integrated set of both thebetween the development of relations. And then interprets and analyzes developmentof the eco-town North Lake Project Profile and build profiles based on the status ofNorth Lake study to analyze the situation. At the same time described the process ofbuilding success of the North Lake Waterfront Jining and in the face of severechallenges, as well as a variety of problems for the city in response to the process ofdecision-makers take appropriate measures.The fifth chapter from the design point of view, respectively, from urban design,architectural design and landscape design made constructive recommendations for theupdate and get research results. Urban design contains land use, traffic and parking,pedestrian street design; architectural design includes a new transfer of the old cityarea and waterfront areas of both the corresponding design; landscape design elementsinclude the natural and artificial factors and socio-cultural factors, etc. all aspects ofdesign, each section also contains a detailed design of the corresponding content.Finally, the author describes the competition in the North Lake waterfront zone program, in order to elaborate the theory into practice in the application process forthe medium and small urban waterfront city and explore the process of architecturaldesign.In the conclusion part, the author summarizes the paper, stresses theopportunities and challenges to the waterfront area of Jining Beihu District and hasmore confidence in the success urban waterfront development of medium and small inthe future.
