Today,in America, the environmental movement is the largest socialmovement.This paper conducts an overview on American environmental movementfrom60s to90s with Marxist materialistic theory. It consists of an instruction, sixchapters, a conclusion and a reference.The introduction part presents the academic value and practical significance of thispaper. This part gives a general introduction to the research work done by American andChinese academic field.Chapter1examines two origins of thought, including Conversation andPreservation.Then it elaborates the realistic reasons from international and domesticenvironment。Chapter2presents Rachel Carson’s lifetime and the publication of SilentSpring. The publication of Silent Spring marked the beginning of American modernenvironmental movement. Carson and her book played an important role in Americanmodern environmental movement history. Chapter3elaborates the development ofAmerican modern environmental movement at initial stage from60s-70s.And throughenvironmental laws, regulations, the founding of EPA state environmental movement’sbooming clearly in the60s-70s. Chapter4analyses modern environmental movementfaced resistance in80s after Ronald Wilson Reagan become the president of the UnitedStates. Even so, in80s environmental movement still had a great development,especially with the emergence of gross-roots environmental movement containingradical environmental movement and environmental justice movement. Chapter5analyses environmental policy’s change from George Bush to Bill Clinton. And t dofurther introduction of the development of grass-roots environmental movement.Chapter6probes into the American environmental movement from60s to90s.TheChapter are discussed from paying attention to problem, the social basis and socialinfluence three aspects. Through these discussing,conclusion points out that we must adhere to this movement’s variety and inclusivity in order to the sustainabledevelopment of society.
