Riparian zones are the interfaces between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The riparian buffers provide benefits such as riverbank stability, water quality protection, and wildlife habitats and corridors. Urbanized areas with the change of landscape pattern of the riparian zones are paid more and more attention by ecologist in the world.TM imagery (band5, band4and band3), in years of1995,2000,2005and2010were used to study the changes of landscape patterns of the riparian zones in Suzhou supported with RS and GIS. We created buffer zones of riparian zones and executed supervised classification. Using of FRAGSTATS as a tool, we analyzed the changes of riparian landscape pattern with the landscape metrics at the class and landscape level. The results showed that:1. The change of the landscape pattern of riparian zones in Suzhou City was obvious:NP increased by33.2%, AREA_MN decreased by24.9%, IJI increased by18.9percent from1995to2010, the landscape pattern change obvious features of landscape fragmentation and the AREA_MN of miniaturization; SHDI increased3.6percent, the degree of landscape heterogeneity increased; LSI decreased by11.9%, the overall shape of the riparian landscape became more complicated; the riparian landscape did not have a good continuity and was disturbed by human activities serious.2. Between1995and2010. the main river and lake areas in Su2:hou City increased3.5percent, the NP increased by44%. the degree of landscape fragmentation increased and the shape was more complex; the area of constructed land increased by38%, the NP increased by45%. the shape of constructed land was more of the rules increasingly; the farmland area reduced by45%, and showed a declining trend, the NP increased by140%with growing degree of landscape fragmentation, the shape is more complex; woodland area increased by43%, NP reduced by45%, the dominance in the overall landscape upgraded and has a more complex shape. The landscape pattern of each patch type happened different changes, and changed significantly.The influence of urbanization on landscape pattern of riparian zones in Suzhou City was the fragmentation of the landscape patches, therefore, the focus of landscape spatial structure optimization should be to maintain and restore the continuity and integrity of the landscape ecological processes, and maintain and strengthen the continuity of the overall pattern. Based on it, the author suggest us construct the criss-cross rivers in the study area to be green channels, optimize the patch spatial pattern of farmland to build a smooth and efficient transportation corridor network, and follow the way of ’dotted lines combined’ to optimize the woodland landscape. Through it. we can optimize the landscape pattern of riparian zones in Suzhou City.
