With the research on the Virtual Geographic Environment,3D symbol has been one of thehotspots and difficulties of the research, with which various types of information withspatial-temporal position feature is represented. Drawing analogies from natural language, thispaper studies some issues of3D symbolic design and expression. The main contents are asfollows.(1) Analysis and summaries of current researches of map symbols and their3Dramifications were produced from two aspects: carto-semiotics method and carto-linguisticsmethod. Those indicated that the current researches are mainly focused on carto-semioticsmethod, while carto-linguistics method to3D symbol doesn’t catch enough attention. In view ofthis situation, an idea about the research on3D symbolic design and expression based onlinguistic is proposed.(2) A discussion about basic theory of3D symbolic research was provided based onlinguistic. First of all, the basic theory and methods on linguistics and carto-linguistics weresummarized, and the significance of linguistics to3D symbol is obvious. Second, based onlinguistic theory, the concept of3D symbol was defined from the perspective of the combinationof the form and meaning, and then some problems were probed into, such as design principles,visual variables and spatial information transmission model about3D symbol and so on. Third, apositive answer was given to this paper’s basic problem that why this paper studies3D symbolbased on linguistic, and a study framework was proposed for3D symbolic design and expressionbased on linguistic.(3) This paper discussed the problem of3D symbolic design and modeling based on themethodology of linguistics by the numbers. First, drawing analogies from natural language, theconceptual model of3D symbolic design which was analyzed in detail from three aspects:graphic physical structure, semantic morphological feature and structural principle was putforward based on linguistic methodology. Second, guided by the conceptual model, this paperdesigned a kind of semantic-driven hierarchical symbolic design method which was explainedwith examples. In third, a dynamic organization model of3D symbol whose logical structure,coding scheme and interface design were discussed in this paper was proposed to solve theproblem of three-dimensional symbol modeling in computer environment. And this paperachieves an object-oriented3D symbol system.(4) A symbolic expression strategy was discussed systematically centered on the semanticcomputation. Firstly, the strategy for the overall design was accomplished, and an idea about dimension reduction was proposed to transfer the graphical symbol computation to codedlanguage computing. Secondly, mathematical modeling was carried out for the semanticcomputation. This paper studied the target clustering method based on the computation ofsemantic similarity, and has proposed a kind of hybrid semantic similarity computation modelbased on the polymerization semantic tree. In basis of the model an improved k-mediodsclustering algorithm was carried out. Third, from the angle of computer modeling, this paperconstructed the3D symbol display model based on semantic computation, and gave theexamples of engineering application.(5) Three cognitive experiments about symbolic design were designed and put in practice,i.e. questionnaire survey of cognitive comparison about different symbol systems, cognitiveefficiency comparison experiment of symbol system and the simulation experiment of symbolinformation transmission process. The results show that the symbol design method proposed inthis paper has certain feasibility and scientific nature. On the basis of the experiments and theresearches did previously, this paper put forward a kind of linguistic model of spatial informationtransmission whose inner language mechanism was described.
