Tianjin Container Terminal Berth Scale Research

With the development of the world economy, the advance of economic globalization, the increase of international trade, container transportation has experienced from nothing to scale. After the entrance of the WTO, our country's container transportation has developed rapidly, coastal ports hold this development opportunity to construct the container terminals and berths, which leads to the rapid enlargement of the terminals'capital and scale. As to being the container hub port that faces northeast Asia and middle-west Asia, tianjin port will develop container transportation powerfully in the future.With the enlargement of the container terminal's scales, two problems has occurred: if the existing container berth scale is appropriate and how much is the right scale. The two problems are always the managers'concerns, also are the focus of the debates in the industry. The study of berth scale of container terminal company is a complex work, due to the differences of countries'conditions, stages of economic development, port development levels and berth scale standards. In the study of berth scale of tianjin port's container terminal company, it should be considered carefully that our national conditions and the actual development of tianjin port, so as to put forward the berth scale standards that is appropriate for the present development level of tianjin port.Based on the domestic and foreign existing research results, this paper applies the DEA method and cobb-douglas function to scale efficiency analysis and scale determine research of our national container terminal corporations, selects berth length, bridge cranes load, the number of employees of our national container terminal corporations at present stage as the input index, container throughput as the output index, through the efficiency comparison and establishing the production function of container terminal corporations, to find the better berth length standard of our national container terminal corporations.The study manifests'that:at present, our national container terminal corporations are still on a small scale, should be expanded. The total berth length of container terminal corporations when it achieves the economies of scale should at least more than the average length of1358m berth scale. Shanghai port (group) Zhendong container terminal company branch, with1634m of coastline length, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency both effective, makes use of production technology, makes the ability of output maximization and the ratio of the output and input optimum in the industry. It is suggested that about1600m of berth length for the management of container terminal companies of tianjin port is appropriate.
