Nowadays, the era is a word filled with information and Internet, our format design has gradually developed from typesetting to digitized informatization design, turned from static format to dynamic conveying, deduced from two-dimensional design to multi-dimensional design, run from single paper media to the digital multi-media and transformed traditional print design into virtual digital information dissemination. The tendency of these historical changes reflects the visual evolved mode of format design. The21st century is an era that various media are being intergrated.Therefore, comparative study of the format design in the traditional and new media has become a hot spot.Based on the unitary design concept, the purpose of this article is to explore the format design from the angle of its rationality, humanities and qualities of art, to analyse the format features of newspapers and webpages through some methods such as giving examples, making comparisons. And to make a summary on the basis of the present problems in order to conclude some certain design methods and tends of changes for the possible directions of the format design future development.Format design is supposed to have specific forms of expression and methods for conveying information. Multi-media application has brought the format in this Internet era infinite space for expanding. New media format design can't merely copy the doctrine of traditional design, we should not only see the commonalities between them, but also recognize their existed distinction. When designing the format, different media should take full advantage of their merits in transmission modes, reacquaint ourselves with the format design in traditional sense, and expand the design space, which can make the format design develop towards pluralism and bring brand new visual experience for different audiences. The design methods of information conveying change as the media varies, so continuous exploration and improvement is necessarily needed in our practice.This article takes the newspaper's format design for an example, and takes the webpages' format design as the representative to make a comparative study in format design between the traditional media and new media.
