Static navigational map is comparative to dynamic navigational map, whic-h the display is static, and is solidly installed and placed in a real environme-nt as navigation aid (e.g. navigational maps in scenery spots). YAH (You-Are-H-ere) navigational map has a YAH symbol showing the current location of the map reader, is now widely used in public spaces. The design of static navigat-ional map concludes display elements and layout design (north-up, track-up). Previously, much research has studied the design of navigational maps; howe-ver, there are still deficiencies. The goal of this study is to investigate user's demand characteristics of static YAH navigational map design, provide some i-mprove suggestions, the carry out experiments on the influence of navigation-al map design on navigational performance of orientation and learning, to put forward the optimal design of static YAH navigational map. This study has three parts:in part one, set Westlake Scenery area as ex-ample, investigate on the user expectation of navigational maps, and to dete-rmine the user requirements on display elements, and suggest a improved m-ap design(north-up with a directional YAH symbol); in part two, two experim-ents were carried out to study the orientation performance on three designs of navigational map(north-up, track-up, improved north-up),in experiment2-1,a-bsolute judgment performance was studied on three designs of navigational map, and in experiment2-2, relative judgment performance was studied; in p-art three,experiment3-1studied the learning performance of two kinds of spa-tial knowledge, considering the influence of learning goal and perspective. Ev-entually, from the user mental model of navigational map and the results of the three experiments, the optimal design of static YAH navigational map was put forward. The main results of this study:1. User mental model of navigational map design:(1), user goal on readi-ng a map concludes route goal and survey goal;(2), north-up layout is prefer-red;(3), the requirement of display elements:YAH symbol, public transportati-on information and toilet information are one dimensional elements; orientati-on information of YAH symbol and recommended route are attractive elemen-ts;(4)) suggest a improved map design (north-up with a directional YAH symbo-I).2. Performance of absolute judgment of the three map designs:improved north up>north-up>track-up; performance of relative judgment of the three map designs:track-up>improved north-up>north-up.3. The influence of navigational map design on the learning performance of spatial knowledge:in the same learning time, the performance of single perspective map learning is better than multi-perspective map learning, the r-esult is consistent in both route knowledge and survey knowledge. In the ap-plication of map design:improved north-up>north-up>track-up.4. Conclusively, the optimal static YAH navigational map design is the im-proved north-up design, of which the layout is north-up, accompanied with a directional YAH symbol.
