In the past two years,OTN technologies,products and network applications are thehot topic in the Chinese telecommunication field. In fact, ITU-T began to develop OTN'sstandards in1998, and the first series of OTN's standards had been pulished before2003,including G.709, G.798, G.873.1etc. But the OTN products could not have any materialprogress, because the OTN technology had nothing application in the real project before2007.With the first domestic OTN product released in2007, under the push of equipmentmanufacturers and the support of some operators, the OTN technology has achieved rapiddevelopment in China. And in the standards field, many domestic industry and nationalstandards (On the ITU-T standards basis) had been pulished. At the same time, the "OTNnetwork overall technical requirements", the"OTN test method" and so on are in progress.It is different from the DWDM, OTN has the ODUk cross-connection module in theproduct structure. So OTN products have the obvious advantages in the networking andbusiness scheduling compare with DWDM products. But also because of the limitation ofcross-connection capability, OTN products still only can be used in small capacityrequirement network, or rather, the backbone application of OTN has great developmentspace.This paper is focus on the application of OTN equipment in the backbone networkthrough the way of theory combined with practical, including network architecture,wavelength assignment, business scheduling and regeneration section setting, etc. And thedevelopment of OTN technologies and products, including transmission capacity,cross-connection capability, automatic control and so on are researched. I hope the paper'sconclusion will help a little in the research of OTN's application and development.
