Engine test technology has trended to be automatic, intelligent and networking with continuous development of the detection technology, computer technology and electronic technology. And the trend is manifested by the application of virtual instrument and CAN bus in engine measurement and control system. This paper proposes an engine measurement and control system, which is consist of GW2.8TDI diesel engine—DW50 dynamometers system as the main body, PC software designed in virtual instrument and hardware with CAN bus communication, based on the analysis of the actual engine measurement and control system. The functions of the system include:processing and analysis, real-time display and management of the engine parameters data, evaluation of the engine performance and remote control of test equipment separately. Through the system an actual system can be improved.There are main jobs of the design of the engine measurement and control system based on virtual instrument and CAN bus as follows:(1) The system structure is outlined based on the design philosophy which is the combination between distributed hardware structure based on CAN bus and modular PC software structure based on LabVIEW after research on engine test technology at home and abroad at present.(2) Vibration signals intelligence node is developed for acquisition of vibration signal based on C8051F040 microcomputer. Thereby a CAN bus communication network of hardware is built with the node, CAN232MB communication protocol converter and USBCAN-Ⅱcommunication interface card.(3) Login, real-time measure and control, analyze the performances and manage data of PC software are detailed designed based on LabSQL toolkit, LabVIEW and C mixing programming, signal processing module and DataSocket network communication. And PC software is designed completely through the system functions integration.(4) The conventional performance characteristic curves of the GW2.8TDI diesel engine are drew through the experiments in practical project, like load characteristic curves and speed characteristic curves. And the rules of these curves are explained. In addition, the signals of noise and vibration are also analyzed in time-domain, frequency-domain and time-frequency domains. And so Noise environment, main drive source and detail information of the engine vibration are mastered.The experiments proved that the system is good to meet the requirements of engine performance measurement and control. So the expected purposes are achieved.
