With the development of the Internet and broadband penetration, Data, multimedia and other business communications has become the main flow of information transmission network. This requires that the metro transport network (MAN) have a necessary transmission capacity which can provide a variety of business needs. SDH network is flawed in the transmission of data, which prompts MSTP(Multi-Service Transport Platform) technology come into being. MSTP is based on SDH platform, while achieving TDM, ATM, Ethernet and other service access, processing and transmission, to provide a unified multi-service network node. From birth until now, MSTP has gone through three stages of development. At the present time MSTP focuses on the application of Ethernet Service. The main technologies involve Layer 2 switching, loop control, packaging and mapping three. Layer 2 switching technologies include: pass-through, Layer 2 switching, spanning tree and other technologies; Loop control includes 802.3 MAC layer of Ethernet and RPR ring; Package includes: GFP, LAPS, ML-PPP, PPP encapsulation protocols and so on;Mapping includes: cascade and virtual concatenation, LCAS, and etc. This paper focuses on several key technologies and related applications of MSTP in the Ethernet:VC virtual concatenation and LCAS, Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Ethernet and RPR ring network functions. In the application, as the MSTP technology has its features and advantages, it can act as a transmission network in many types of network elements, and its functions in the transmission network is widely used. In short, MSTP not only advances in technology, but also directly meets the current MAN applications.This paper takes MSTP technology in mobile MAN Yangzhou engineering as an example, and introduces the MSTP principle, the current several key technologies and related technology. It focuses on the analysis of the needs of mobil MAN Yangzhou, and discusses specific building programs, MSTP equipment, installation, upgrade, MSTP system functional testing and other aspects. From the entire system of the test, it proves the design of the system is reasonably feasible,. It also confirms the MSTP technology in engineering practice has been basically mature application which can be widely used in the construction of the current MAN.
