With the development of Internet technology, many new transmission technologies and protocols have been proposed. Stream Control Transmission Protocol is developed by IETF Signaling Transport (SIGTRAN) working group to improve fault tolerance by multi-homing characteristics. SCTP functionality and application are continuously migrating and being extended to meet the needs in reliability and mobility. As for multipath routing in a complex network structure, how to take advantage of SCTP transmission resource of multiple paths becomes one of the research hotspots.The thesis first discusses the SCTP failover technology, and analyzes the impact on the protocol mechanisms of the failover time and transmission performance. It focuses on the failover of the three control parameters, including Path.Max.Retrans, Retransmission Timeout, and Heartbeat Interval. NS2 is used as a means of simulation experiments to study the performance of SCTP transport. Based on the experiments, details of transmission throughput and switch performance under various parameters conditions are provided.In the further, the study on SCTP transmission performance is presented for the cases in presence of multipath routing such as ECMP. Results of simulation experiments show that SCTP throughput can be is doubled only if bandwidths and delays of direct routing and alternative routing are equivalent. However, when the bandwidth ratio and delay ratio of different routings deviate from one another, the effective bandwidth tends to decrease greatly from the aggregated bandwidth in magnitude. Studies discover that ECMP has a negative impact on SCTP throughput performance, and can alter the expectable characteristics of the failover time for the coexistence of ECMP and SCTP in general.
