| In the contemporary society, the mass media has become the nerve that contacts all social sectors, and the news media, as an important component part of mass media, has become an important part of social structure and the hub of harmonious social network system. Because of its unique function, the news media has an extensive and far-reaching influence to constructing the socialist harmonious society.This paper is divided into five parts:we talk about both the foreign and domestic status of research on the topic and provides research scope and methods in Chapter 1. The second chapter analyzed modern media's main types and basic characteristics and its social function based on classical Communication theories. In Chapter 3 we talk about the meaning of building a socialist harmonious society and the responsibility of the news media. The fourth chapter deals with some problems of modern media in the practice of promoting socialist harmonious society, and analyzes its cause. In Chapter 5,The author discusses his own opinions about how to give full play to the news media in constructing the socialist harmonious society from two aspects: social role cognition and path selection of news media in building the harmonious societyThis paper hope to examine the current news media development path, find out the balance point between media and social development and give full play to the social function of the news media through identifying the relationship between modern news media and the building of a harmonious society.
