The Electric Power Load Management System, which is an essential part of the electric power marketing technical support system, has been a primary and the only technique to collect clients' information and perform automated remote operations in modern Technical Supporting System of Electric Power Marketing. The electric power load management system consists of system server, remote terminal unit (terminal for short), and the communication link channels between the server and terminals. By deploying the terminals at the client-side transformer substations, it implements 24-hour real-time monitoring and collecting power consumption, power usage and other crucial data related to electric power corporations' production. The collected data will be uploaded to the central database via dedicated wireless communication lines for electric power industry.The majority of current deployed electric power load management systems are utilizing 230MHz wireless communication technique. Due to the fast expansion of the modern city, the dead spot problem of the 230MHz link channels has emerged, that could obstruct system running seriously. As the communication technology evolves and matures rapidly, GPRS has been widely adopted to use. In order to overcome the problem that 230MHz link channel has, we choose the GPRS which has the advantage on coverage over the 230MHz link channels. This paper takes the power load management system of Shenyang as the typical example, introduces GPRS into the electric power load management system, thoroughly analyzes the research and application of GPRS in this field, thereby, to improve system practicality and provide necessary technique to attract customers, improve the efficiency and service for the electric power corporations.Firstly, the paper makes study on the GPRS wireless communication technology, introduces the principles of the GPRS communication, meanwhile, explores the architect and communication of the electric power load management system. Then, it analyses and explains the GPRS technology in hardware design, software design, function design and the implementation for the terminal. Eventually, it exerts the advantages of GPRS technology, reaches the goal of improving the practicality of the electric power load management system. The system meets the requirements of the electric power marketing information management.In the tests, the GPRS terminal could dial to the server and transfer data successfully. The tests have shown that the electric power load management system with GRPS technology is able to operate stablely and reliably. The expected result has been achieved and the design requirements have been met. It is also proved that the system is better for safety and economy management of the distribution network's operating, can be benicial to the power management and improvement in network power supply quality.
