As the direct source to obtain the ocean environmental information for navigation, the ocean environmental database system for ship has been widely used in the field of military and civilian vessels. The system provides essential information for navigation, sailing task, as well as battle in the sea, which effectively protects the safety of ship. The system operation condition directly influences quality of navigation and sailing task. Meanwhile, with the continuous expansion of the functions and the sharply increasing of ocean information data, the performance issues of the system come to the fore, which is already an urgent task to this kind of system performance optimization. However, current movement is relatively backward, without systematic performance optimization research result for the ocean environmental database system for ship. Based on the existence of mentioned problems, the performance optimization processes and methods for the operational phase of the system have been raised up in this paper.Firstly, the performance optimization methods of Oracle have been studied deeply based on the clear target of database performance optimization. Meanwhile, Oracle performance factors of the different phases have been analyzed and summarized on the basis of the system life cycle.Secondly, the paper has summarized the general process of the database performance analysis in the operational phase. In addition, Oracle database performance optimization methods, especially from the level of DBMS and database application have been researched in depth.Thirdly, in the background of the laboratory research project--the ocean environmental database system for ship, the system architecture and functions, together with features of application have been analyzed detailedly in this paper. Combining with the performance reports collected by Oracle performance diagnostic tools, it has focused on the diagnosis and analysis of CPU, memory, I/O, SQL, index and other aspects of the system performance, as well, summarized the definite reasons for the system performance bottleneck.Finally, in view of existing issues, the performance optimization processes and methods for the operational phase of the ocean environmental database system for ship have been studied and summarized, which not only include all of the critical factors affecting system performance and tuning procedures, but also in consideration of the correlation among the optimized projects to minimize the cost of performance optimization. The response speed and the rate of the measured data input database has been increased obviously by carrying out Oracle database performance optimization and application on the ocean environmental database system for ship. At the same time, overall performance of the system has been improved. This achievement, to some degree, will have practical significance in contribution to new idea for other related database systems to optimize performance.
