This thesis studies on the dual image construction and communication of People of the Year event hold by Southern Weekly. The main texts are based on the reportage of People of the Year on Southern Weekly in 2000-2009. The main theoretical basis is media image building, press planning, and frame theory. And the main methodology is text analysis and content analysis. Combining with several field perspectives, such as journalism, communication, psychology, the thesis is going to complete an empirical study.This study tries to explore the new methods and perspectives on researching the figure coverage, which has reference significance for media in guiding the current public opinion, maintaining the good public credibility, and building good image of their own. In order to avoid being theoretical closed by using a single theory paradigm, the thesis is combined and extended the relative theories, thus to enrich and extend the figure coverage research. The result shows that, under the general proposition of"affecting the progress of China and our lives", the people reported in the event entitles with the image of "innovation" , "dream", "patriot", and "mercy", etc. In the reports of Southern Weekly, mostly, the round characters are described, and a variety of methods are adopted to shape those images, such as dispute and conflict, contradiction and contrast, emotion effect, label typecast, and so on. The image of the Communicator is elusive, but can be found indirectly in the process of shaping the objective images. The People of the Year event reflects many images of Southern Weekly, such as international awareness, elite awareness, interactive awareness, authority awareness, prospect awareness, people-oriented awareness, brand awareness, convergence awareness. Besides, a variety of effective communication strategies are applied in People of the Year event, including"celebrity charm"communication,"Symbiosis effect"communication, Mirror image communication, Compounding communication.
