The UV(ultraviolet) imaging technique which is a newly developing technique has been applied more and more extensively as an insulation detection method for high voltage electric equipments these years, which plays a very important role on ensuring and maintaining the operation reliability for the power grid. This paper which is based on UV imaging technique is a study on the detection method on corona discharge phenomenon of high voltage electrical equipments.First of all, the paper introduces the principles on corona discharge and UV imaging technique, analyzes the impact from the external conditions on UV detecting, and draws a sum on the common high voltage electric equipment defects detected by the UV imaging technique.Secondly, a technical route on detecting corona discharge phenomenon is presented by applying the image processing technique. After analyzing the noise characteristics of UV image, a method is presented to noise reduction based on mean and median filtering. The technique of cumulative discharge points information is given based on SURF registration and temporal difference method and mathematical morphology due to the small targets and little information of corona discharge points in UV images. The suspected discharge areas are picked up by ellipse detecting through RED arithmetic and analyzing the characteristics of cumulated discharge points. Then with the electrical transmission lines detecting based on Radon transform, the actual discharge areas in the UV images are determined by the judgments upon the suspected discharge areas through mathematical morphologic. The experiment outcomes indicate that this technique route can make a effectively detection on corona discharge phenomenon under complicated background conditions.In the end, this paper studies the electric transmission lines operating status in our country, clarifies the necessity of employing the helicopter round-inspection, sums up the problems of the helicopter round-inspection on the electrical transmission lines in our country, and designs a helicopter round-inspection system based on UV imaging technique.
