Because of the advantages, such as high performance, low power consumption and low noise, SSD (Solid State Disk) based on FLASH media is the idea succedaneum of traditional magnetic disk drive. It will be more widly used with the decrease of cost and the increase of the capacity.FLASH is a type of semiconductor memory media that can be electronically erased. Performance of FLASH IC is limited by the art and interface, so we should develop parallel methords to improve the trasfer speed. This research deeply analyzes the associated technology of FLASH, and clearly describes several ways to improve parallelism of FLASH storage system, such as overlap, concurrence and multi-channel.As a part of this research, a novel FLASH controller has been designed and implemented. It is compatible with almost all kinds of FLASH chips. It also provides error correction function. We also designed a new operation mode named latent command mode, which can contribute to reduce the interruption number and improve the performance. To verify the rationality of the parallel architecture and the feasibility of FLASH controller, we designed a SSD prototype based on FPGA which provides four-channel FLASH, USB 2.0 interface and low level software package. This prototype has passed tests and can be used as a platform to verify the research on FLASH interconnection pattern and design of FTL algorithms.
