With the continuous expansion of LAN applications, the amount of data is growing rapiddly. The concept of VLAN, which stands for Virtual Local Area Network, is introduced for the control of the LAN broadcast information. Two devices in different places can be located in the same VLAN. But this requires that the devices on the link between these two devices through should also belong to the VLAN. Manually configure VLAN attribute on these devices is very complicated. In a complex network, the the workload of configuration is difficult to unbearable. Moreover, changes in network topology and configuration will bring great cost.To overcome this problem, some methods of spreading VLAN configurations are put forward by related organizations, and are developed to standards protocols. These protocols are different in working principle, and too obscure to understand. This paper discusses the working principle of these protocols, and selects two protocols widly used on the market, VTP and GVRP protocol for study. Firstly we analyze these two protocols, summarize the advantages and disadvantages of these protocols, and compare the different application protocols scene. Then select a new released IEEE standard protocol MVRP protocol for depth analysis.The whole study adopts waterfall model of software engineering, abstracts the attribute propagation mechanism in MVRP protocol into each function modules, and finishes the design and implementation of MVRP attribute propergation mechanism basic function and features on some device platform. Finally, we successful implemented MVRP protocol attribute propagation mechanism on the device operation. As the research results of the subject, MVRP attribute propagation mechanism on the device is not only running normally, but also optimized on design level for improving performance of VLAN attribute propergation in the test, the process fully reflected the function spreading and superior performance in packet data and propagation speed in MVRP protocol compared with original protocol. the amount of data with same number of VLAN attribute propagate running on MVRP protocol is only one-tenth of which running on GVRP protocol. Moreover, for the support to MSTP protocols, MVRP protocol can propagate VLAN attribute on multi spanning tree topology. Successful completion of this subject not only analyzed and summarized the two VLAN attribute propagation mechanism, but also verified the new features and superior performance of VLAN attributes propagation in IEEE new standard MVRP protocol, and implemented the propagation mechanism in the protocol. In the increasingly fierce market competition, MVRP protocol VLAN attribute propagation mechanism will have its own position, recognized and widely used by the user.
