Fault Information Processing System, which plays a great role in maintaining the secure operation of power grid, has been applied and developed in our country for over ten years. However, there are still some problems, such as disunity of communication specification and communication mode, ambiguity of system function standard, instability of long-time operation and so on. Based on the IEC61850 Standards as well as the current situation of Fault Information Processing System in China, this paper gives an investigation in the following main respects.●Introducing IEC61850 standards from the perspective of its background, structure, modeling thought, communication principle, as well as the describing language of substation configuration.●Analyzing the feasibility of IEC61850-based Fault Information Processing System by comparing its advantage and disadvantage over IEC103 protocol, basing on the IEC61850 standards'application state to the secondary devices.●Sorting out the function specification of Fault Information Processing System, avoiding the uncertainty problem of system's main function, which is caused by the continuous expanding of system function. ●Conducting the software and hardware designing plan for Fault Information Processing System.●Carrying out verification test of the design plan on the basis of engineering examples, and summarizing the practical application state.The function specification and designing plan for the new IEC61850-based Fault Information Processing System, which is brought forward by this paper, will play an important referring and guiding role on developing and implementing of Fault Information Processing System in the future.
