Energy industry is critical to the national economy. China's energy industry is highly dependent on coal. In recent years, coal mine safety in production has aroused extensive attention. Traditional mine safety monitoring system has many problems which make coal mine safety in production difficult to guarantee. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) is a new information acquisition and processing technology with the features of low cost, low power consumption, strong adaptability and so on, which is very suitable in the mine environment monitoring.In the study of wireless sensor networks combined with the application background of the coal mine, a mine environmental and personnel monitoring system based on WSN is proposed. The monitoring system based on wireless communication will provide more reliable protection for mine safety in production. The monitoring system's main function is to monitor environmental parameters and to position of miners.Routing protocol and localization algorithm is core technologies of wireless sensor networks. This paper's analysis and design focuses on these two aspects of the system. Based on the analysis of LEACH protocol which is the classic hierarchical routing protocol, a new clustering routing protocol based on node-energy and time-competition is proposed. The simulation analysis shows that the new protocol has a good effect to balance network energy consumption and extend the life of the whole system. Considering the conditions of the node hardware and the application background of the coal mine, localization algorithm based on ranging with RSSI and ribbon channel is proposed to realize the function of positioning. The localization algorithm which is simple and easy to operate can meet the requirements of the system positioning. PC interface software as an important part of the system, whose main function is serial communication and data display, is designed on LabWindows/CVI software platform.System experiment is done in the lab. The results indicate that the system has good effect in communication, high reliability on networks and good accuracy on positioning. The system achieves the requirement of design and can be good to meet the needs of mine safety monitoring in production.
