With the rapid development of electronics and computing, there are more and more electronic equipments on-vehicle equipped in vehicles. Currently, the car-mounted electronic equipments which are used in coaches are mainly based on PC. However, this kind of electronic equipments is not very appropriate in vehicles. We have designed a kind of car-mounted VOD that is based on SOPC, but this VOD is restricted by situation at that time, so it can only play single format video. For the purpose of adapting the current trend of technical development and meeting the increasing demand of people, we have to develop a new car-mounted VOD system whose basis is the old one.The second generation of car-mounted VOD system is based on the first one. Similarly, both of them use SOPC based on FPGA. However, some technologies out of fashion are replaced by the new ones, at the same time the advantages and characteristics are referred, which can both be compatible with original products and finish the task of product developing.The new VOD mainly need to solve three problems: the first one is that, for the server, the problem is how to design the transfer protocol of video data with different formats and rates; the second one is that, for the terminal, the problem is how to play multi-format video; and the last one is the band width cannot meet the need. Thus the structure of this paper is that:The first part of this paper introduces the background, the development of relative fields, the main researching content and the crucial technologies to be solved of the car-mounted VOD system.The second part mainly tells significant technologies used in the server and the terminals of the first generation of VOD system and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies.The third part introduces the whole design of this system.The fourth part is the design of the server of the system. The new VOD system still takes the SOPC based on FPGA as the core to operate the data's reading and transferring. This part includes the program of the whole design, the design of system on chip, the circuit of the data's reading and transferring, the design of each function module and the technologies used in these modules. The fifth part talks about the design of the terminals of the second generation of car-mounted VOD system and the relative functions of AU1250, which is the hardware platform of the second generation whose controlling core is FPGA. The second generation uses the strong functions of AU1250 and makes it decoding chip. The function modules of AU1250 can work well under the control of FPGA, while FPGA is also peripheral logic modules of AU1250.The sixth part is about application of the circuit and the thoughts of the SOPC based on FPGA in this system.The last part talks about the summary and the outlook of the paper.
