A Comparative Study On Sports Event Reporting Between China Daily And New York Times

Since reform and open, the communication and cooperation of information between countries has become more and more at the background of information globalised. Chinese newspapers not only face the competition from the other domestic media, but also face the challenge of newspapers abroad. As the traditional media, the people's daily adjusted the strategy of reporting sports event whose overall quality has been improved a lot to confront the competition and challenge from the worldwide media. However, compared with western media, there is a certain gap in reports'width, depth, perspective and so on. By adopting content analysis, case study and comparison study, this paper analyzes the People's Daily and the New York times reports about South Africa World Cup in 2010 from the aspects of reports quantity, reports theme, reports type, report way, reports structure, reports position, news source and so on.. On the top of that, this paper discusses the differences between these two newspapers on sports news reporting and puts forward some constructive suggestions to perfect People's Daily's sorts news reporting.Being different from the former study of party newspaper, this paper finds out that the sports news report of people's daily has become more "soften", which accords with the overall strategy of the contemporary paper's sports news report. But in report depth, the people's daily is far beyond the western media's. Only from the application of background materials, Chinese sports journalists'inadequate preparation can be seen. The people's daily should do their outmost to meet the audience's needs of sports news information by increasing the predictive reports, investigative reporting, and profound sport news commentary and so on. In addition, because sports news page is limited, the sports news report will face some restrictions whatever in reports' width, depth, perspective and so on. Therefore, I believe that when reporting great sports event, the people's daily can expand the sports section properly, trying to solve the contradiction between the inadequate sports news information and the readers'eagerness of plenty of information which cannot be found in other media except newspaper.
