Because of the spread application of power electronic equipments and FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System), power systems become more and more satisfying. At the same time, harmonic is concerned as an important problem of power system. The research of harmonics compensation has taken an important place in electrical engineering area. Traditional passive LC filter has some inherent disadvantage. APF (Active Power Filter) has been recognized as a feasible solution to "harmonics pollution".In this paper, the reason why harmonics appear will be detailed at first. And then, the mechanism of APF compensation is discussed. As the most popular fundmental theory of APF, transient reactive power theory is introduced. The harmonics detection methods based on transient reactive power theory are shown at the same time. After analyzing the classic harmonics detecting method, a control stratege based on active power balance is processed. Compared with other methods, it does not need complicated harmonics detection but has satisfying performace with less input variates. The performance could be shown by using MATLAB.An experimental system has been established based on one type of 16-bit microcontroller——MSP430FE425. The design of hardware and software will be detailed in this paper. The active current needed by whole system is obtained by PI regulating of DC voltage feedback. Therefore, the system becomes simple and satisfying on harmonics compensation.
