With the rapid development of the Internet and the information construction, layer three switches have been widely used in the backbone network, metro backbone network, aggregation layers and so on, so operators put forward higher requirements on layer three switch's redundant reliability. At present, we mainly use hot swap, hot switching and hot backup technology to achieve redundant reliability of layer three switch. The software and hardware system of layer three switch have full distributed forwarding structure. In this architecture, the master MPU, slave MPU and line card are distributed in different slots of the backplane, the MPU should also have a redundant backup in order to guarantee the system's reliability. Meanwhile, they have to store the routing information, device information as well as configuration data. However, at present the implementation of hot backup has three apparent shortcomings as the low code reuse rate, the poor code portability and the uncontrollable quality of data synchronization. And by using different data structures, each application module stored routing information, device information and configuration data which need to synchronize, so the memory interface is not uniform.In order to solve the above problems, this thesis designed an embedded distributed database, which can meets the demand of master MPU, slave MPU and line card of layer three switch on physical distribution, storage and hot backup, thus ensures the high reliability of layer three switch.This thesis focuses on the design of embedded distributed database. Based on embedded techniques and distributed technology, embedded distributed database provides a set of unified API interfaces, which improve the reusability and portability of software and the quality of synchronization. In addition, the synchronization and storage of data has been implemented. And that's why layer three switch has high reliability.
