This paper mainly discussed the formation, species, properties and application of the hollow laser beams. The main methods of generating the hollow laser beams are mode-conversion method, geometrical optical method, optical holographic method, phase plate method etc. The main types of the hollow laser beams are Gaussian hollow beam, Laguerre-Gaussian beam, high-order Bessel beam, TEM01* mode doughnut beam, LP01 mode output hollow beam, double Gaussian distribution hollow beam, focused hollow beam. Hollow beams are mainly applicated in laser processing, guiding of atoms, cooling of atoms, medicine, biology, military and other aspects.This paper advanced a new way approach to hollow laser beams—the combinatorial system of ortho-axis and negative-axis pyramid, and discussed the transmission characteristics of hollow beams from transmission-model combinatorial system of ortho-axis and negative-axis pyramid and reflection-model combinatorial system of ortho-axis and negative-axis pyramid, approached to the hollow laser beams which size of hollow macula, the width of aurede and the internal and outer diameter of aureole are controllable. In the final, this paper advanced a new theoretial medel for the formation of hollow beams—two sets of the combinatorial system of ortho-axis and negative-axis pyramid. Theretically, the hollow beams generated by this system is parallel light, and this strictly control the width of aurede and the beam radius. This method has not applied to the experiment yet, but has great potential for development.
