As an emerging area of research, Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN),which is a cross-application along with the technology of modern sensor, radio frequency, communication networks and signal processing, etc., is becoming a more and more extensive application in the mining and industry, military monitoring, environmental monitoring and many other aspects. Different from traditional networks that based on physical address, WSN is a new type of data-centric network. The routing protocols for WSN has its own characteristics and requirements , for the traditional network routing protocols are not adapted to this area. The wireless communication takes majority of the total energy in working time of the wireless sensor node. Accordingly, it is becoming a hot direction and sticking point to search routing protocols and algorithms for WSN. The researchers apply themselves to design a well universal and low energy-consumption controling algorithm for WSN. In additional, it is not only necessary to perceive relevant data, but to let users know the location of the incident in practical applications, so the location tracking by the WSN must be must be solved.Being distinguished by the network topology, the existing routing protocols for WSN could be classified into flat routing protocols and clustering routing protocols. And the latter ones are becoming a great trend for their advantage of energy efficiency. By analysing and comparing the routing existing protocol, and considering the defect which is not benefit to save energy caused by the active response mode in ETBG algorithm, this thesis presented an Energy Conservation Algorithm based on Dual-response mode for WSN (ECAD) based on improving of ETBG, taking the advantage of both active and passive response-mode in APTEEN protocol into reference, adopting the soft and hard threshold and sleep mechanisms. So that the wireless sensor nodes select the necessary data only to transmit, but keep sleeping when the monitoring data in the region does the soft and hard threshold, in order to save energy and prolong the network lifetime. And the effectiveness of ECAD algorithm has been verified by simulation.Based on proposing the ECAD algorithm, this thesis bringed forward the tracking skeme and algorithm for the target in the monitoring area, in which the WSN is deployed as a hierarchical cluster topology by the ECAD algorithm.
