Being composed of vast cheap and low energy-consuming wireless sensors nodes disseminated in a specific area, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has found wide application in fields of defense military, environment monitoring and disaster scene, owing to the fact that wireless sensors can instantly sense, acquire and process various kinds of information and then send it to terminal users. However, wireless sensor nodes are normally battery-driven and can hardly be supplemented once they were put into place. Accordingly, how to prolong network lifetime using limited energy has always been a key issue. This paper deliberated on clustering routing and location-based routing, then design an energy efficient location-based multi-hop clustering routing protocol (EELMCRP), which is designed to improve such weak points in those existing protocols as high energy consumption, short lifetime, unreasonable clustering and etc. In the proposed algorithm, location information is used to separate the region into fixed clusters and this simplified the cluster head electing and cluster forming process. Hereby, destination oriented multi-hop routing (DOMR) is adopted to realize relay transmit.Simulation results show that EELMCRP has advantages over previous ones of prolonging lifetime of the system, more effective utilization of energy, higher network throughput and better network scalability. Specifically, the lifetime of EELMCRP is 2.9 times that of LEACH, and data transmitted by EELMCRP is 3.4 times the amout of data transmitted by LEACH with the same energy.
