In recent years, along with the unceasing expansion of the secondary vocational education scale, millions of vocational students' comprehensive quality promotion has become a bottleneck of our national overall quality. In secondary vocational schools, cultural basic subject teaching is a foundational engineering which enhances students' cultural quality and humanity spirit quality. The subject of Chinese is shouldering an important task and the Chinese extracurricular reading is playing an irreplaceable role as well. As Zhongshan City is at the forefront of the reform and opening-up, the vocational secondary school students, the secondary vocational Chinese education, and the vocational students' extracurricular reading status have their own distinctive regional characteristics as well as universality. The article takes the activation and expansion of vocational students' extracurricular reading as a starting point. With the students of Zhongshan Technical Secondary Schools as the research object, it investigates and analyses the present Zhongshan city secondary vocational school students' extracurricular reading status, existing problems and reasons, and puts forward the corresponding countermeasures on the basis of analysis. First it analyzes the problems of the secondary vocational school students' extra-curricular reading, such as their poor awareness of reading, the insufficiency of reading, low level reading, single channel reading and poor effect reading. Then it summarizes the restricting factors of reading, such as the social cultural environment, family atmosphere and the school. Finally, it focuses on how to expand and promote the vocational school students' extracurricular reading scope and quality, and puts forward five aspects of countermeasures and suggestions, including:1. stimulating interest,2. strengthening reading affective education,3. creating the campus reading atmosphere and cultivating the campus reading environment,4. establishing extracurricular reading system for the secondary vocational school students to enrich their experience of reading,5. constructing secondary vocational school students' reading assessment system by combining writing with reading to improve the reading effect.
