Diarrhoea is one of the ubiquitous sicknesses seen in clinical studies. Diarrhoea is defined by the increase frequency of bowel movement or a change in the quality of faeces. The faeces of a diarrheic patient can either be loose, contain food residue or even watery in terms of quality. As the economy grows vigorously, the pace of contemporary life and work is also increasing. Intense living pace, disturbed mental pressure, unhealthy habitual lifestyle, and overstressed work place etc all contributed to the onset increasing of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is thus more common amongst sub-healthy people. In fact, it happens more often amongst sub-healthy people. Hence, studying its aetiology and its therapy is immensely vital for promoting mental and physical wellbeing, which thereby also serves to improve the living quality.Chinese medicine has recognised and comprehended diarrhoea since the pre-Qin era. Over the course of 2,000 years, Chinese physicians, through their clinical experiences, have also enriched the understanding of diarrhoea and have accumulated abundant effective formulae for treating diarrhoea. Thus, using statistics as the main methodology to analyse the herbal formulae for treating diarrhoea in FangJi DaCiDian (The Complete Dictionary of Chinese Medical Herbal Formulae), this topic aims to discover the patterns used by ancient Chinese physicians to diagnose and treat diarrhoea. In addition, bibliographical method is also applied to systematically gather information about diarrhoea from the past dynasties. On top of that, diarrhoea-related diseases are also discussed in brief. The entire research will, therefore, not only draw invaluable references for current clinical diagnosis and treatment, but also broaden the boundary of diarrheic studies. The content of this topic can be divided into three parts. The first part contains an overall description of diarrhoea, including definition for various types of diarrhoea and the course of its historical development. The second part is the statistical analysis of the herbal formulae in FangJi DaCiDian. By analysing the statistical data, this topic hopes to discover the therapeutic thinking of ancient Chinese physicians for treating each type of diarrhoea. The last part is the discussion. Emphasis will be put on discussing the findings of the first and second part of the content.
