Nowadays people's consumption has been increasing emphasis in their own image, taste, identity and emotional aspect, which is proposed as the "symbolic consumption" by Baudrillard. The most active areas of the city commercial district is urban business district, which are influenced heavily by the "symbolic consumption". That will change the techniques of space design in the city commercial district unprecedented, especially the design of external space that attract and conduct people to enter the building for consumption. Therefore, as the background of the study to the external space of the contemporary commercial district, urban business district should be designed from the principles and methods to analyze the external space after analyzing its characteristics and demands.The thesis begins with elaborating the purpose and significance of the subject, describing the dynamics of domestic and the foreign researches and existing researches,elaborating the basic research framework of the thesis. The external space of the city commercial district, under the background of symbolic consumption, maintains the characteristics of symbolic images, popular and fashionable by describing the external space and symbolic consumption of the commercial district, then analyzing the symbols consumer demand for physical space in the city and its performance afterwards. The results have also combined with Venturi and Rem? Koolhaas's space design ideas and building works in symbolic consumption of the society, blending the external space of symbolic consumption and urban commerciaI district together.The argument begins with the symbolic level of consumption in ChengDu:it is proved that the symbolic consumption in ChengDu is in a mature and stable stage. After selecting Yanlord plaza, FuLitianhui plaza and ChunXi street district as a case, comparing the well-known commercial districts that is domestic with abroad ones, the author has arrived at conclusion:the interaction of symbols, popular, and human experience, interaction with the mass media, as design's principles to external space of the urban commercial district in the context of symbolic consumption. In addition, the author has made concrete design methods for the external space of street and square 's external space respectively, as the conclusion of this thesis.The methods of design for street's external spaceThe design of the overall spatial layout can be divided into three sections:the staged space of entrance, the imagery spatial of introduction, the kernel space of branding, in accordance with the road design.The methods of design for square's external space also consist of four parts:(1):The overall spatial scale which is the premise to attract consumers in commercial plaza in the Context of symbolic consumption.(2):The personalized interface of constructions is divided into the bottom of the entrance space﹑the central and top interface'design(3):The use of external space'materials.(4):The use of new media.
