Comparing with other repairing methods, dental implant is the common repairing method for tooth loss which has the best beauty degree and survival rate. Whether the implant position and direction is accurate is one of the key factors to determine the success of implant surgery. Traditional dental implant navigation technology which has poor reliability is difficult to ensure the operation accuracy, while Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) can not suitable for practical application for small and medium hospitals and patients in our country because of high cost. So, developing a dental implant navigation system which can reduce the medical equipment purchasing cost and the patients'surgical cost has important practical value. Therefore, based on the advantages and disadvantages of the existing dental implant navigation technology, the paper does the work as follows:(1) A new CAD/CAM navigation template model was proposed, and the framework design for dental implant navigation system was completed.(2) Based on WINXP system, the pre-operative planning system for dental implant has been developed. Firstly, ray-casting (RC) accelerating algorithm was used to realize 3-D CT faulted image reconstruction. Then, the implant position, direction and depth planning based on the 3-D reconstruction model were realized. At last, the implant point coordinates and the implant angle were measured by aided measurement system.(3) The actuator design and development for the navigation instrument of template making were accomplished. During the design process of the actuator, innovation design theory of Mechtronics and CNC machine movement scheme were introduced in the design of movement scheme. The schemes were evaluated by fuzzy semantics method. Then, the optimization model is selected, and the physical prototype is developed.(4) Motion control system of navigation instrument which used microprocessor STM32 as its control core was designed and developed. In this paper, overall design of the hardware system and detailed design of each component module were accomplished, and PCB circuit board was developed. As to the software system, it was based on RealView MDK and used C language to write underlying program. Communication with the upper computer was through serial port RS-232 to realize accurate control of the navigation template making.(5) Upper computer software's development of the dental implant system and motion control system before the surgery was accomplished. The software system used both Visual C++and VTK to program. Core algorithm of the system was accomplished by C++and visualization was accomplished by VTK. What's more, planning system interface design before surgery, and the control interface design of the navigation instrument, were integrated through Visual C++.
