Thermal design standard of civil buildings gives the specific prescription of building thermal design for cold area which belongs to heating region. That is: Cold area's building should meet the winter insulation requirements firstly, and also have some summer heat insulation ability. Building energy conservation design in this area emphasizes on reducing energy consumption of heating on the long term. However, its summer is hot and humidity high. With global warming and heat island effect, indoor thermal environment of the ground floor room of residential building has became to affect human comfort and health. This paper has analyzed twenty-year climatic data of typical cities in cold area, carried on lots number of field investigations and e xperiments, and systematically discussed improvement strategies for indoor physical environment of the ground floor room of residential buildings. Though investigation of its thermal, sound and lighting environment it's found that there are many problems in this kind of room. Those are: seasonal wetness, mold and fungus growing, destroyed structure and furniture etc, insufficient illumination, and bad ventilation condition. These problems affect indoor hygiene and health conditions. On the basis of investigations and field experiments, the author thinks it is necessary to improve indoor physical environment of the ground floor room of residential building, because they are warm and humid in summer in cold area as same as warm summer and cold winter area. Only the lasting time is short. So that designers should pay attention to humid and warm environment of ground floor room. This paper put forward some conception designs for the ground floor room from three aspects of building layout, single building design and construction design. It is hopeful to give designer and building standard organizers references.
