After experiencing a rapid expansion of extensive mode, the intensive improvement of Chinese urban space has become increasingly urgent. People who, when summarizing and reflecting on the achievements and problems in the process of residential district construction, made a direct, careful, systematic observation of the status of the communication space and the problems existed tend to overlook the spiritual needs resulting in the real serious deficiency of communication space. The thesis attempts to follow the history of the vertical axis, comparing ancient and modern, and make a horizontal comparison between Chinese and foreign contemporary theoretical standpoint and innovation, seeking a people-oriented design concepts and methods, so as to play a guiding role on the practice of designing residential district in the future. The main contents are as follows:Retrospective design evolution of modern urban residential district at home and abroad, this article carries out data analysis from related concepts, the theoretical basis.Through comparative study of classification of residential district, three types of typical residential district have been obtained. And the investigation and analysis have been made on the population distribution and communication needs as a design basis for communication space. At the same time, various types of communication space of material composition have been studied and the nature and scale of communication space have been analyzed as a design means of communication space. From four aspects such as values, population size, architectural form and space levels etc to explore three typical design strategies of communication space. Finally, make overall evaluation on the effect of the design of the project and take it as the evidence of conclusion.
