The construction enterprises in the nuclear industry in China have experiencedpainful a transition to the civil industries and tempered in the market competition, with acontinuous endeavor to explore a way out for enterprise development. Nuclear power hasbeen the dominating industry for the construction enterprises in nuclear industry. In theprocess of nearly 20 years in building up the nuclear power stations, the constructionenterprises have achieved rapid development with improvement of the technical,economical and managerial capabilities by continuously learning the world advancedtechnology and construction management techniques throughout the construction of thenuclear power stations by either self-reliance or importation from abroad. Relying on thestrength in technology, quality and management, the enterprises have reached the positionof monopolization in the area of installation engineering in the nuclear industry and gainedthe important core competence in the nuclear power engineering market. The new nationalplan in expanding the nuclear power stations provides the construction enterprises anopportunity for further development. Facing the fast growth of the nuclear power market,the original business and management methods in the construction enterprise in nuclearindustry are no longer viable to meet this requirement. It is the big challenge for theconstruction enterprises in the nuclear industry to achieve further and greater development.This paper, from the above mentioned angle, tries to explore a new andeffective approach to meet the requirement of the current nuclear power development andexpedite the growth of the construction enterprises in the nuclear industry. Havingreviewed the evolutional history of our country's nuclear industry and analyzed the presentnuclear power status, this paper aims at exploring China's nuclear power developmentpatterns and rooms for further development through a comparison with the world nuclearconstruction status so as to facilitate formulating the long-term development strategies forthe construction enterprises in the nuclear industry. Focusing on the analysis of the industrystructure and value chains of our nuclear industry, this paper identifies the competitionstrengths and weaknesses of the construction enterprises in the nuclear industry through theindustry structure analysis and explores the ways in the enterprise differentiation, costreduction and gaining new competitive strength through value chain analysis. In addition,this paper analyzes the existing problems of the construction enterprises from 6perspectives including enterprise planning, market competition, cost reduction,management efficiency, resource allocation and corporate culture. Based on the valuechain analysis, the paper proposes specific countermeasures in 6 areas, i.e. craftingenterprise development strategies, strengthening market research, optimizing the industryvalue chains, improving management styles, increasing enterprise core competence andbuilding the corporate culture typical of a learning organization.
