As the key part of RF&MW equipments, frequency synthesizer's quality can determines some important indicators of the system. With the rapid development of wireless communication, radar, and space technology, The frequency synthesis technology has made great development. This paper introduced the history of development of frequency synthesis technology, present brief introduction of the main stream frequency synthesis technology, compared their respective advantages and disadvantages, and then present the design and implement of the 60MHz~12GHz ultra wideband frequency generator. In the design scheme, by careful analysis and calculate the various indicators of the design, ensure the feasibility of this design. In this paper, divided the design into three parts, includes frequency generation part, output power control part, and control part, focusing on the frequency generation part and control part. Frequency generation part consist of fractional-N YTO PLL module and frequency down conversion module, frequency divider module, frequency-double module, a combination of these modules to cover the entire frequency band. Power control part consist of ALC module and digital controlled attenuators. Control part is implemented by high speed MCU and necessary peripherals. For each part and module, to select the appropriate circuit and devices, by good design and careful debugging, realized part of the indicators of the design. This frequency generator also has easy-to-use GUI and better mechanical structure, through continuous improvement, this frequency generator can be used as a general instrument in research and manufacture.
