Phase shifter is one of the most important parts of such electronic equipment as communications, radar systems and instruments, especially in phased array radars, hundreds of thousands of phase shifters are needed for phased array antennas. The need for phase shifter is huge, so to short the design period and speed up time to market would be quite important for companies to seize the market opportunities. This was the origin of this research work. Based on the available papers and in consideration of manufacturing, this thesis is a comprehensive study of microwave phase shifter design.PIN diode is an important control device for microwave control circuits. Its nonlinear model is presented along with other discrete components' models that are needed to design phase shifters.Microstrip line is an important structure for propagating Quasi-TEM mode. The discontinuity of microstrip line would affect the performance of microwave circuits, so it is studied herein, and methods to compensate for this effect are proposed.The usual structures of phase shifters and their merits and drawbacks and the scope of application of the individual structures are discussed. Besides, means of compensation for different structures are proposed. Many materials related to phase shifters are merely focused on the structure itself, they rarely mentioned the DC bias part, but in reality, the DC bias would also influence the performance of phase shifter, so two different ways to bias the control components are included.On the basis of above mentioned work, a phase shifter design platform is constructed using ADS and HFSS, hence the design of phase shifters would be eased significantly.Finally, a Ku band six-bit digital phase shifter is designed using this platform. The comparison between simulation and measurement show the validity and feasibility of the work presented in this thesis. This could also be a way for RF and microwave engineers to accelerate their design work.
