Due to the rapid advance of computer technology, computer graphics, and communication technology, the simulation technology in the virtual reality becomes one of the major research fields. The virtual campus is implemented based on the virtual reality techniques. In the virtual campus, the computer simulates the real campus entities and displays them using computer graphics. The realization of the virtual campus provides a great aid to the University resource management, environmental planning and University growth. In addition, it also promotes the University reputation and brings the tremendous economical benefits to the University.Based on the VRML technology, this thesis has designed and implemented the virtual campus system, in which the Sichuan Civil Engineering Professional College was modeled. VRML language and multiple virtual scene modeling tools are used to complete the modeling of the variety of campus sceneries. The scene dividing and integration techniques are implemented to optimize the system. JavaScript language is utilized to develop the interactive functionalities in the virtual campus system. The focal point of this thesis is the modeling techniques of making the virtual scene more realistic. It also focuses on the implementation of the interactive function of the virtual campus system. Further more, this thesis applies the real time processing techniques and algorithms in the development of the virtual campus system. The system design achieved faster the speed of tracing of the pictures and their textures in the simulation, at the same time, better the graphical quality.Based on the actual needs, we built different models for a variety of objects in the virtual campus using either VRML or 3DS MAX. We improved rendering speed through simplifying the object description, emphasizing the algorithms, utilizing the prototypes, and implementing the virtual scene dividing and integration techniques to optimizing the system. At certain level, these implementations have resolved the slowness of navigation of the virtual campus. In terms of the interaction and cartoon simulation of virtual campus, we introduced the JavaScript programming language to implement cartoon simulation and interactive functionalities using VRML provided applets and Script applets. Finally, we summarized the implementation results based on VRML virtual campus system. At the same time, we analyzed the areas needed for the improvement. We proposed the next goal of improve further the rendering speed and increase the variety of the scene models of the virtual campus system.
