Camera phones are a promising platform for hand-held augmented reality. As their computational resources grow, they are becoming increasing suitable for visual tracking tasks. Modern mobile phones have become a compelling platform for mobile Augmented Reality. They contain all the equipment typically required for video-see-through AR: A computer with graphics acceleration, a camera, and a display. Even though the computational power available on phones still lags far behind desktop PCs, some researchers have already demonstrated that it is sufficient to perform real-time visual tracking.Performing an AR system on mobile phones is a high-end skill. In particular,in America, Germany and Japan, many elite-schools and research institutes are engage in this part. However, to our country, less resources can be offered by. Researching AR on iphone have a significant background and momentous means.Tracking is a most important technology in AR system. In this paper, marker tracking technology based on iphone is researched. By setting a marker in real scene, camera pose according to this marker is calculated and then virtual objects could be attached on it. The main work in this paper is as followed:1. The paper studies vision based registration and tracking technology and analyzes the performance of the algorithms. I present an algorithm for fast marker detection well adapted to changing illumination conditions and occlusions. Experiments show that in comparison to common marker detection algorithms, this algorithm is both faster and more accurate, making it suitable for handheld devices with limited computing resources.2. Aiming at the difficulty of getting raw video frames from an iPhone, the paper presents a work around solution that makes AR applications possible.3. Designed and implemented an AR demo application. The result has proved the feasibility of an AR application for the iPhone and that it can achieve the result which was only possible in bigger PCs in the past. AR applications for handheld devices provide better portability, mobility as well as robustness.
