Xiao Er Ya was the first book which supplemented Er Ya and it was the second book of textual exegesis in the history of-Chinese linguistics.In the Qing dynasty, under good academic atmosphere there were about ten people who annotated Xiao Er Ya,thus many explanatory notes of Xiao Er Ya were produced.Hu Chenggong's Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng was a kind of annotation which had very high academic achievements, but few people made full studies of the book. In this thesis the writer intends to make a full study of Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng and show the academic achievements obtained by Hu Chenggong. This thesis will provide reference for the research of Chinese linguistics.The thesis consists of four parts.The first part is introduction.This part introduces Xiao Er Ya's name, writing time, author, content, academic achievements, explanatory notes, and situations of research. This part also explains the purpose, methods and research meanings of the thesis.Chapter One is Hu Chenggong and his Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng. This chapter makes a brief introduction to Hu Chenggong's life and scholarly work, and explains the motivation and purpose of his writing, and shows the reference to research results of others in Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng. Dai Zhen said that Xiao Er Ya was an apocryphal book, but Hu Chenggong didn't agree with Dai Zhen.In order to show the true facts of Xiao Er Ya and provide reference for others, Hu Chenggong planed to write Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng. In the process of writing the book, Hu Chenggong referred to research results of others.Chapter Two is Hu Chenggong collating Xiao Er Ya.This chapter discusses the reasons, methods, and achievements of Hu Chenggong's collation. Xiao Er Ya arose early and had a lot of errors in the long and winding process of spread.In the course of writing Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng, Hu Chenggong collated Xiao Er Ya carefully by using several methods.There were advantages and disadvantages in his collation.Chapter Three is Hu Chenggong annotating Xiao Er Ya.This chapter expounds the following problems:the method of searching meanings from sounds, analyzing Chinese characters, searching meanings of words, seeking names of things, correcting errors.The method of searching meanings from sounds was the most important method of exegesis in the Qing dynasty. As a member of Qianjia school of thought, Hu Chenggong used this method widely in the course of annotating Xiao Er Ya.Hu Chenggong paid attention to analyzing Chinese characters.In order to make further interpretation for the meanings of words, he differentiated and analyzed synonymies, deduced and supplemented meanings of words, explained the changes of meanings.He searched names of things and studied regulations.He didn't only collated Xiao Er Ya, but also corrected errors in other people's books.In general,Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng was a good book and had very high academic achievements, although there were disadvantages in it.The final part is the concluding remarks. When we think highly of Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng, we should admit that other annotations of Xiao Er Ya are also valuable. In order to provide reference for the study of Chinese linguistics, we should make further studies of Xiao Er Ya Yi Zheng and other explanatory notes of Xiao Er Ya.
