Under the background of rapid economic development and China's accession to the WTO, the newspaper market faces important opportunities and challenges, many newspapers continue to explore appropriate business strategy and development path. The characteristic strategy has become a major mean for many specialized newspaper to obtain many unique advantages, enhance brand competitiveness, and expand the survival and developmental space.The paper analyses the domestic and overseas newspaper operation situation and puts forward a series of constructive strategies for the development of Chinese newspaper industry through the integration of macro and micro perspective. Then the paper goes deep into micro level and comprehensively summarizes the " Women Today" newspaper's advantages and disadvantages, competition and opportunities being faced by using SWOT analysis tool, the paper mainly focused on the ideas and specific means of characteristic competition adopted by "Women Today" newspaper and its economical and social effects. The paper analyses in-depth the connotations, causes and the specific implementation of the competitive strategy being taken by "Women Today" newspaper from the perspective of changing of social consumption structure and in light of some relevant cases. At last, the paper made a conclusion and proposed a strategic objective for the characteristic competition idea.
