The Digital Video Monitoring System plays an important role and has a large market, whether in military fields or civilian fields. For the pressing military and civilian requirments, the digital video technology is rapidly developing. In order to improve the quality of monitoring video and to meet a variety of occasions, the miniaturization of equipment is essential, and the current FPGA-based video monitoring system has become more and more popular. This paper designed a digital video monitoring system which can be used on battlefield. The system equipped with 12 cameras, when the armored vehicles moved forward, it could help to detect a full range of surrounding environment. Thus it played a great role in judging the situation of the battlefield. This paper begined with the introduction of the Digital Video Monitoring System technology and how to produce the video data, as well as the basic concept of FPGA technology. And then based on the study the composition of the video signal, VGA and DVI display interface, analyzed the advantages of using FPGA to control the entire system. After taking full account of the request, we selected the video decoder chip SAA7111A, video encoding chip ADV7125, DVI sent chip TFP410, CY7C1061AV33 type SRAM and EP2C35FBGA672 type FPGA chip to design the hardware circuits. And then we finished the schematic design and PCB layout. Finally, according to system requirements, the paper designed the FPGA-chip system logic modules, including video capture buffer asynchronous FIFO module, I~2C bus configuration modules, video frame buffer control module, VGA video display module, DVI video display module and so on. Based on this, we finished the system hardware and software debugging, switched 12 cameras to display on the screen, monitored the surroundings successfully and achieved the intended design goals.
