Capability Maturity Model Interpreted (CMMI) is a management model, at present which is now widely used and recognized in software industry and related system integration industry. It is based on theory of process management and quality management. At the same time it collects a lot of best practice from the industry. Now it became the industry standard in IT industry. Since 2003 the automotive supplier U company has used this model to improve development competence and made the great achievements. The practices in U company prove that this model is widely valid and effective in development management and process management. The author worked for U company for many years, of which 8 years were spent in R&D department, and took several positions in R&D area, e.g. engineer, project manager and R&D manager. The author joined the implementation of CMMI in U company from the beginning and led the implementation project directly as project manager. The roadmap of model implementation in U company is also compiled by the author. The author accumulated a lot of knowledge and experience through these activities.The author hopes to share experience got in the related work by this article. The article will start from introducing the structure and content of CMMI and process management and describe the details of management improvement and benefits in U company after CMMI implementation. The article also discusses the existing problems in U company, e.g. human resource management and encouragement, boundary management, and put forward some solutions for these problems. The author hopes to share some ideas about this model and process management further.To strengthen the R&D competence and realize industry upgrading from OEM to ODM is one of main development directions in industries in the near future. It is also the orientation of the national industry policy. The author hopes that this article will be helpful to the companies or individuals who are looking for a way to improve R&D management.
