Passive acoustic location technology is a target detection technology using the sensor array arranged as a definite geometry which is used to receive the noise signal of target and the method which is used to extract the location information of target. The technology is used for the weapon systems such as smart mine, which are used to defense the low altitude penetration target like armed helicopter.Combing with the characteristics of noise of tank and helicopter, the models of acoustic target and array are simplified and restricted in this paper. The theory of acoustic array was expounded systemically. And the comprehensive used four-element cross array was studied mainly. The capability of location was simulated based on the localization equations and the error equations that were developed in this paper.Time-delay estimation technique is the key to the passive acoustic location technology and the focus of this paper. The time-delay estimation technique was studied mainly in this paper. The links between the wavelet multi-resolution analysis and time-delay estimation techniques were also analyzed systemically. A new second correlation time-delay estimation algorithm was developed based on the links. At the same time, a new method called multiple cycle adaptive extract method that was suitable for the problem of extraction of precise results obtained from the wavelet multi-resolution analysis was developed. This new method was applied to the time-delay estimation technique proposed earlier in this paper. The numerical results demonstrate both the algorithm and the method are valid. The experiment of passive acoustic location technology was conducted for the validation of the performance of time-delay estimation algorithm and the capability of location of the four-element cross array. The experimental results show that both of them are suitable for the passive acoustic location technology. In summary, the research results accomplish the expected task of this paper. The proposed model and experiment have reference value for the relevant study of passive acoustic positioning technology.
