With the development of embedded system and video processing technology, video capturing and monitoring are not relying on PC any more. Embedded system and PPC (Pocket PC) play a very important part in video capturing and monitoring area.Three latest resolutions are integrated to design an embedded system with functions of video capturing, processing and storing in this thesis including ARM processor, single chip digital video camera and MPEG-4 video compression.Introductions and advantages of the ARM processor and single chip digital video camera we chose are presented at beginning of this thesis. The entire procedures of designing the hardware system and circuit, combining hardware modules, testing hardware functions are expressed following. For the problems we met during the debugging, the processing of hardware designing is summarized following.Software designing is very important part on this thesis because of the multi-function and complex-logic. After detailed introductions of the software principles and functions, every logical block, branch route and specific process of each single program module is focused on.Video coding algorithms and international video compression coding standards are presented at last part of this thesis, follow by the origin and feature of the XVID algorithms. Then the processes of debugging XVID project and testing coding performance on PC platform are reported in thesis as well as transplanting XVID to ARM platform.After the design and realization of entire system is finished, the conclusion is made that, with the help of high performance of ARM processor and XVID algorithms improved for transplanted, the embedded video capturing and coding system has exceeded the design performance. Considering the character of small size, light weight, low power consumption and good reliability, this design is adapted to video supervising both in automotive and room-limited situation.
