Along with the development and progress of economic society, the people have more and more urgent demand to the video scene's reproduction cross time space. Especially, in safe prevention and control domain this kind of application it is more widespread and more thorough. Meanwhile along with the development of computer network technology, electronic technology as well as digital signal processing , and so on.the video surveillance which have the characteristics of direct-viewing, convenient, the information content rich and so on also changes with each new day . From the static picture to the dynamic video, from the analogous system to the digital system, from the simple point hard disk video recording, the short distance transmits to the large-scale network, the long-distance real-time control, from accounts for the high band width the low quality bare video stream to advanced compression algorithm processing high grade low code rate MPEG-4, H.264. In recent years the digital surveillance technology obtains the considerable development, the new video surveillance system take the embedded technology as the core , in the stability, the integration rate, the performance, the price, might as well as feasibility ,it has the prominent superiority, It represented the direction of research and development of present video surveillance system.In this thesis, the video surveillance system used for expressway based on embedded system is deeply studied. We design and implementation encode and decode card of MPEG-4 . And then design and implementation the advanced equipment based on the microprocessor MPC8272 and embedded Linux operating system.The thesis describes the whole design scheme and main functions of the system, and discusses details on the building process of the developing environment, based on the embedded Linux operating system, including the configuration of development tools, kernel considerations, root file system setup and bootloader setting up.Based on this system flat, the design and implementations of device driver of the video CODEC chip by the name of VW2010 are analyzed detailed. The end of this thesis implements video surveillance system by the design of the network communication module, including the C/S and the B/S mode of the system, according to the system requirement under the Linux OS.
